The fascination with largest, biggest, smallest, tallest, and shortest is a human thing; we enjoy such exercises.
So, let’s get into the spirit of things and learn about the biggest dog breed in the world.
The two aspects that we consider when we think of the biggest dog breed are its height and weight. Irish Wolfhounds and Great Danes are tall dogs. Irish Wolfhounds are usually given the honor of being the biggest dog breed in the world although the correct term in their case would be “tallest dog breed” amongst all A.K.C recognized dogs. These wolfhounds can touch up to 35 inches at the withers. Great Danes give the Irish Wolfhounds a tough fight at the “biggest dog breed” stakes. These usually average out at around 32 inches at the withers although the occasional specimen may well be taller and heftier than any Irish wolfhound. Standing on their hind legs, these breeds would be more than seven feet tall, that is a lot of muscle with powerful jaws to boot!
The reason why A.K.C finds mention in the earlier paragraph is that there is one dog breed which is actually taller and bigger than both the Irish wolfhound and the Great Dane. This is the Bully Kutta, it is a Mastiff and a big one at that. It can touch 42 inches at the withers. The dog is found in South Asia, in India and Pakistan. It goes back a long way in history, with Persians and Greeks using it for guarding soldier encampments. In India it was used to assist in big game hunting. A little more information on this less-known but noble animal, it walks with the grace of a tiger, it has a reputation for being a fierce fighter and yet like all dogs it loves its master and makes a good companion dog.
In terms of weight, the Irish wolfhound tips the scales at 120 pounds, the Great Dane weighs around 160 pounds on an average; the lesser-known Bully Kutta weighs in at 210 pounds. Kutta, by the way, is the Hindi word for “Dog”.
If we consider the second criterion, i.e. weight, for selecting the biggest in the world then the names to reckon with are the Saint Bernard, Neapolitan Mastiff, and the Great Dane. Mastiffs, in their different forms as the Bullmastiff, English Mastiff, etc are well-represented in any list of heavy dogs. Hark back to what you’ve read earlier, the Bully Kutta is also a mastiff.
The English Mastiff can weigh up to 200 pounds and measure 30 inches at the withers, the Neapolitan Mastiff can be as heavy as 170 pounds and be around 31 inches tall, we already know about the Great Dane, the Saint Bernard too can pack 200 pounds in its 28-inch frame.
The biggest dog breed may be separated by a couple of inches and a few pounds here or there; but we can be sure that these beautiful animals care little for such trivia that fascinates men. They’re all awesome and enrich our lives.
